Children are funny little creatures. Have you ever tried to convince a child to eat something because “it’s good” for them? In my experience, the more successful adults are in making children believe that something is in fact “good” for them, the less the children want anything to do with it, whatever the “it” may be. Following this premise, I wonder what would happen if children found out that swing sets are really good for them. Would they then refuse going to playgrounds and turn away from swing sets? Can you imagine all the swing sets on all the playgrounds abandoned and forsaken because children gained that bit of wisdom? A scary thought, if you ask me.

There is a huge variety of children’s swing sets in the market today: metal swing sets, wooden swing sets, plastic swing sets, and vinyl swing sets. To add to that mix of opulence, children’s swing sets also come in many shapes, sizes, colors and styles all with hordes of varied accessories. When it comes to choosing from these many options, it is the adults among us that will research and investigate to no end and ultimately decide based on our own personal preference and the cost of the equipment. Now, I am not here to tell you to buy any such thing blindly because that would truly not be very wise. But I do want to assure you that, as long as the product has the necessary safety certifications, it does not matter because in the long run the benefits to your children are equal.

The fact of the matter is that children’s swing sets are hugely good for them on very many levels regardless of which style you choose, from which manufacturer and of which material. They are all very good for them, but let us examine this assertion more closely:

• Socially: Interaction with other children on the playground swing set teaches them how to get along. Interfacing with children of different backgrounds teaches them tolerance. Being forced to wait for their turn teaches them patience. Resolving misunderstandings teaches them forgiveness.
• Physically: Climbing, swinging, jumping, sliding, crawling, pushing, and pulling on swing sets builds their strengths, coordination, balance, and flexibility. Additionally, it teaches them to enjoy physical activities, which is a habit that they will carry with them into adulthood.
• Mentally: Healthy bodies promote healthy minds. The make believe and spontaneously improvised games that children play on and around swing sets develop their imagination, awaken their creativity and sharpen their thought processes.
• Emotionally: Children playing freely and unconstrained on swing sets are happy and carefree while building memories of a joy- filled childhood that will last them their entire lives. All one needs to do is tune in to their lighthearted laughter and their high spirited outcries to know that they are in fact full of cheer.

Playing on playground swing sets is equal to walking of cloud nine and children really do not have to know that it is good for them!
