USED SWING SETS

You have children who, like all children, could benefit from a wonderful swing set in your own backyard but you are running a tight ship with a limited budget. There are two alternatives to your dilemma: a) you do not buy your children a swing set and deprive them of the joyous fun, developmental skill building and socialization that they would otherwise enjoy; b) you buy them a used swing set that will give them just as much pleasure and health benefits as a brand new swing set would and will save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. For your children’s sake, the latter is of course the better of the two choices.

With all that in mind, please remember to proceed with caution because when you buy a used swing set, just like any other used product, you do not always know what you are getting. I have compiled a list of steps to take to ensure your children’s safety when buying a used swing set:

• Be sure that you can get your hands on the original assembly instructions, warrantees and any other product manuals that came with the swing set in question. If the seller no longer has them for you, see if you can get them from the manufacturer. Otherwise, pass up on this opportunity and proceed to the next one.
• Be sure that the used swing set that you are interested in has not been recalled by either contacting its manufacturer or doing some research on the Internet.
  Be sure that the used swing set in question is age appropriate for your children. If the original paperwork is no longer available, do your own research by either directly contacting the manufacturer or by looking online.
• The used swing set you are thinking of buying could be missing parts and components. It would be impossible to determine that when purchasing online. Therefore I would recommend shopping the old-fashioned. Even so, it is not always easy to tell when viewing it, either.
  If and when shopping off-line, inspect the used swing set as closely as you can to ensure that all its parts work properly and safely. Although it is not always easy to tell even then, but it is virtually impossible when shopping online.
• Check for the cleanliness of the used swing set. It is not a foolproof guarantee, but chances are that if its cleanliness was maintain than it was also maintain in its other aspects.
  You have inspected the used swing set closely, you feel confident that you have done as much research as you possibly could, you bought it, brought it home and set is up in your backyard.
  Your children come home from school, spot the swing set in your backyard and make a mad dash for it. But you must stop them—stop!
• Have you checked that all the nuts and bolts are tight and secure?
  Have you cleaned and disinfected it thoroughly?
• Have you made sure that it stands at least six feet away from any walls, trees, or posts?
  Have you allowed for all moving parts to stand a minimum distance of twice their height from any walls, trees, posts?
• Have you anchored it to the ground securely?
  Have you created a “safety zone” by spreading shock absorbing loose-fill material extending at least six feet from the entire structure and twice its height of the moving parts?
  If the answer to all these is “yes”, let your children enjoy!

LOVE ON A SWING SET, A POEM

In a public playground, on a see-saw,
Two young children played with no wish to withdraw.
He wore blue jeans and a white shirt,
She a ruffled blouse and a pink skirt.

Playing and giggling and having fun,
They’d skip, jump and sometimes run.
All went superbly until Mother called her to leave,
His Father pulled him away gently by a sleeve.

Feeling no resentment as to Mother she went,
He wasn’t angry for being home sent.
Such was the conclusion of a wonderful day,
Both knew that tomorrow they’ll once again play.

He and she met again in the morrows,
Joyfully contented as lighthearted sparrows.
Down slides they went one after the other,
With other kids they would not even bother.

Such was their courtship among slides and swings,
A blossoming friendship from hoops to rings.
He and she loved one another as only three-year-olds can do,
They looked so cute together, those two.

One day she took his hand in hers and left it there to linger,
Stroking it with a concerned finger.
Checking the tip which rubbed the palm of her befriended,
Whilst the other hand he too extended.

Her intention was pure and not wishing to scoff,
She was rubbing to check if the color would come off.
He was brown skinned and with curly dark hair,
She blond and blue eyed and skin very fair.
